Interschool Chess brings together the best Australian School Teams in each engaging and educational chess event.
Our Tournaments are run by expert Chess players who inspire young chess enthusiasts to play their best games!
A Chess Tournament is a celebration of learning. Every child who is learning chess and is enthusiastic about it, should have the opportunity to play in a competitive tournament setting.

A Kids Unlimited Interschool tournament is an educational event where students will learn to improve their thinking skills, manage their time and slow down to get the most out of their brains.  It is where children learn to win gracefully and lose resiliently.
  • Online and Onsite Zone events are nominally named for a Geographic Location - that way you're more likely to bump into people you know (or avoid them!).
  • However, any school may play in any Zone Event.
  • The winning team from each Online and On-site event qualifies for (onsite covid-permitting) STATE FINALS

TESTIMONIALS

This chess tournament was an awesome opportunity to make new friends and improve our chess.
- Nicole Tsoi, Auckland International College (NZ)
Very well organized and well run event.
- Bev Curtis (VIC)
Heaps of fun - great supportive Chess Kids staff. Great environment to learn and meet other great chess kids.
- Mellissa (TAS)
The kids goal last year was to get into the State Finals ... and we were thrilled that two teams made it!!! Although they did not do so well in the finals they had a ball and the experience was invaluable!!!

What is a rating?
A rating is a number which indicates, based on your past performance, how good you are at chess. The higher the number the better you are. The highest rated player in the world is Magnus Carlsen with a rating of 2835.

The highest rating ever was Garry Kasparov reaching 2849 in July 2000.

The best players in the world have ratings as follows:
World Champion 2800
GrandMaster 2500
International Master 2400
National Master  2300

For juniors in Australia (ranked #32nd best chess-playing country in the world at the last Olympiad) the easy way to gauge if you are on track to becoming a Champion is to take your age and multiply by 100.

Eg. Age 9, good target to have a rating in the 900’s
